Northeast Storytelling Festival
Returns to Gettysburg
The Second Annual Northeast Storytelling Festival is scheduled for
September 21 - 23, 2007 at the Gettysburg Village in Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania.
This year’s festival, with the Gettysburg Village and the Gettysburg
Convention and Visitors Bureau as major sponsors, will feature four
nationally known storytellers: Carmen Agra Deedy, Bil Lepp, Dovie
Thomason and Ed Stivender.
Regional and
local storytellers, including Pat Anschutz,
Adam Booth, Gail Hermann and Kim Weitkamp, will also share their
talents throughout the weekend.
The Golden Shovel Award will be passed on to the winner of the 2007
Liars Contest. An Evening of Ghostly Tales in a competition format
is scheduled both Friday and Saturday evenings. Sacred stories are
told on Sunday morning to bring an inspiring conclusion to the
weekend.
Long before the Greeks created their alphabet or the Egyptians
inscribed their temples with hieroglyphs, people were sharing
laughter, history and faith through the spoken word. Stories have
been created and passed on for generations.
Face-to-face interaction connects people in ways that television,
the telephone and the Internet cannot replicate. Legends, mythology
and tall tales are just a few of the varieties of stories that
educate, entertain and enthrall young and old alike. In this age of
e-mails, answering machines and instant messaging we seem to have
fewer and fewer opportunities to sit back and enjoy the art of
listening.
The last 35
years have witnessed a storytelling revival in this country. The
movement began in Jonesborough, Tennessee with a gathering of 60 or
so folks around a hay wagon in front of the county courthouse. Now
over 10,000 people make an annual pilgrimage to that little town to
hear stories about family, fantasy and furry creatures. Dozens of
talented storytellers from all over the country and the world share
their unique perspectives on life, the universe and everything.
Many communities have created their own festivals to bring this
magic to their “neck of the woods.”
Autumn foliage, historic Gettysburg and incredible storytelling
guaranteed to delight listeners of all ages make the Northeast
Storytelling Festival September 21-23 a great fall event.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Award winning author to appear at the
Northeast Storytelling Festival
Carmen Agra Deedy, noted storyteller and
author of six children’s books, will be gracing the stage as one of
the featured tellers at this year’s Northeast Storytelling
Festival. The event is scheduled for
September 21 - 23, 2007 at the
Gettysburg Village in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Carmen needs no costumes, musical
instruments or other props to light up a stage. Her smile and
energy level draw in an audience as soon as she begins to speak.
Carmen’s stories often reflect the American experience, as her
family emigrated from Cuba when she was a small child. She reaches
past cultural differences to that common thread of humor and love
that we all long to share. You will be taken to a different place
and time as you listen to this artist of the oral tradition tell of
childhood trips to the library, literary classics and other engaging
tales.
Carmen’s audio recording, Growing Up
Cuban in Decatur, Georgia, has won the Parents' Choice Gold
Award and Publishers Weekly Best Audiobook. The Yellow
Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark, which tells of
courage in the face of Nazi terror, has won international
recognition and numerous awards. The Library Dragon, The
Last Dance, The Secret of Old Zeb, TreeMan and
Agatha's Feather Bed: Not Just Another Wild Goose Story have
delighted readers of all ages.
The Northeast Storytelling Festival will
feature other nationally known and regional tellers. It promises to
be a delightful weekend of family, fun and fables. Put these dates
on your calendar and visit Gettysburg for some good old fashioned
storytelling.
